Mogadishu, Somalia – Former President of Somalia, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, held a high-level meeting on Sunday in Mogadishu with U.S. Ambassador to Somalia, Richard Riley, to deliberate on the country’s ongoing political and security landscape, with a strong emphasis on advancing Somalia’s state-building efforts.
The meeting aimed to reinforce the longstanding diplomatic ties between Somalia and the United States, while underscoring the critical importance of political stability as the country gears up for nationwide elections slated for next year.
In a statement issued following the meeting, Sharif said, “We discussed the general situation in Somalia, especially security and politics, and the importance of advancing the state-building process, which is always based on political stability.”
He also expressed appreciation for the United States’ continued support, particularly in the areas of security, counter-terrorism, and humanitarian aid, which he described as vital to Somalia’s ongoing recovery and development.
The discussions come at a time of renewed diplomatic momentum, with international partners, including the U.S., stepping up efforts to promote unity among Somali political stakeholders and to support the country’s transition to a stable and democratic governance system.
Ambassador Riley reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to standing with Somalia in its efforts to build strong, transparent institutions capable of delivering services and ensuring peace, despite ongoing challenges on the ground.
