Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty and his Somali counterpart Ahmed Moalim Fiqi stressed Monday the need to facilitate the formation of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
During a meeting in Cairo, both sides urged the AU partners to provide the necessary and sustainable funding for AUSSOM and to support the Somali army in combating terrorism and safeguarding the state’s resources.
They also shed light on the impact of the disturbances in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea on international trade and navigation.
According to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both ministers agreed to elevate bilateral relations into a strategic partnership, focusing on politics, economy, trade, security, military, culture, education, and capacity-building.
They also reviewed the developments in Egyptian-Somali cooperation in various fields, including diplomatic, military, and health training, as well as support for Somalia’s legislative capabilities.
During the meeting, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity by international law and the Ankara Declaration.
For his part, Fiqi looked forward to effective Egyptian participation in AUSSOM, given Egypt’s advanced military capabilities and experience in supporting state institution-building and combating terrorism.
He also highlighted the bilateral military cooperation between the two countries based on the military cooperation protocol signed in August.
The newly formed force, AUSSOM, will deploy in Somalia in January 2025.
