Mogadishu – The Federal Government of Somalia on Friday issued a firm response to opposition leaders who had criticized the Council of Ministers for what they described as a failure to maintain security in the capital, Mogadishu.
State Minister of Defense Omar Abdi Ali dismissed the accusations made during an opposition gathering, specifically addressing comments by prominent opposition figure Abdirahmaan Abdishakur. The minister accused Abdishakur of deliberately misrepresenting the security situation in the city.
“Abdirahmaan Abdishakur is staying at the airport in Mogadishu. He traveled to Siigaale, and if called elsewhere tomorrow, he will go there too. So who is ensuring his safety?” Minister Omar questioned. “Mogadishu is safe. What he said is false, and the people who live here will expose anyone who spreads lies about the city’s security.”
Minister Omar emphasized that while the opposition has the constitutional right to hold meetings in the capital, bringing heavy weaponry into Mogadishu is strictly forbidden. He warned that any actions aimed at destabilizing security or inciting unrest would have legal repercussions.
The minister further revealed that government troops who accompanied opposition leaders during Friday’s event would be investigated, asserting that soldiers who act outside of official commands will face disciplinary measures.
“Heavy weapons are not allowed in Mogadishu. Any vehicles carrying such arms will be dealt with accordingly. Unauthorized soldiers and unregistered vehicles will also be held accountable,” he stated.
In a related statement, Deputy Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Abdulqaad Haaji (Jeego) urged Somali citizens to support the national security forces and contribute to maintaining peace in the capital and throughout the country.
This exchange of accusations and warnings comes as opposition groups prepare for a major political conference in Mogadishu in the coming days, where issues related to governance, security, and the upcoming elections are expected to dominate discussions. The government’s strong response signals increasing political tension amid a surge in opposition activity.
