Somaliland president calls for talks to end unrest in Sool and Sanaag regions

Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi alias Iro has called for  urgent talks to end ongoing conflicts with SSC-Khatumo forces in disputed areas in Sool and Sanaag regions.

During a security meeting with opposition leaders, the Kulmiye and Kaah parties in Hargeisa, on Saturday, 21 December 2024, President Irro reiterated his government’s commitment to an unconditional peace process with all parties involved. 

“The government is not at war with its people, but it is our constitutional duty to defend the country against any enemy,” said Presidential Spokesperson Hussein Ige Dayr. He affirmed that Somaliland’s national forces remain fully authorized to protect the nation and its citizens. 

The move said came at a time when united nations aid organisations have recently confirmed that conflicts in Erigabo town, provincial city of Sanaag Region displaced thousands of civilians who now live in improvised shelters in parts in the Sanaag region and need urgent humanitarian assistance.
