Thousands of families displaced in Erigabo town unrest

The ongoing fighting between Somaliland military forces and SSC-Khatumo forces in Erigabo town of Sanag region in Somaliland administration, has displaced about 43,000 families and killed several people, including children. the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) reported on Tuesday.

The displaced people have reached Ceel Afweyn and Laasqoray in the Sanag region, while an unspecified number of people have arrived in parts of Bossaso, Laas Caanood, Xuddun, and Burco districts, according to UNOCHA.

The UN agency’s report showed that the displaced families urgently needed shelter, water, sanitation, food, health services, and education. Humanitarian operations in Erigavo have been severely disrupted, with schools and businesses shut down in the conflict.

The conflict between Somaliland and SSC forces began on December 14 in southern Erigavo and surrounding areas. Since December 16, a fragile calm has been reported in Erigavo following the withdrawal of SSC-Khatumo forces. However, local residents say tensions remain high, and the situation could escalate further.

The Somali Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation has urged an immediate cessation of hostilities between Somaliland forces and SSC-Khatumo fighters, calling for dialogue to restore peace in the region.
